Whether you are a recent graduate of HVAC school or are a seasoned expert, the thought of starting your own HVAC business will cross your mind.  Now it is more than a thought on your mind, you are ready to take it to the next step; that is, starting your own HVAC business.  After having started and run a successful business myself, I will share some tips for starting your own.

Find a Mentor

The first thing you should do is talk with someone who is experienced running a successful business, preferably an HVAC one.  You can speak with your school where you graduated for references or talk with people you know who have started their own HVAC business, assuming you have been in the business for a while.  A mentor will give you some insights into the nuts and bolts of starting a business.  He can share his mistakes and how to avoid them yourself.  In addition, he can put you in touch with resources that have helped him along the way, such as outsourcing to a good book-keeper.

Create a Business Plan

Before you start your business, you should develop a simple business plan that describes your goals and direction.  A business plan is important for keeping you on a set path.  Many people have made the mistake of growing in different directions without a plan.  Those people who did not stay with their plan are likely out of business right now.  Create a plan and stick to it.

Start Small

It is always important to keep your costs under control, but the most critical time is in the beginning.  Until you have established customers and jobs lined up, it is important to keep your overhead costs low.  You can run your business from home and let the customers leave voice mail messages.  You can even contract with a receptionist business, so you have a live person answering phones.  It can make your business appear professional and more well-established.

Provide Excellent Customer Service

Always be good to your customer.  This includes checking with them days after you completed your work.  The technician should always do their best to arrive on time and wearing clean clothes where possible.  If there is a chance of being late, take the time to call to let the customer know.  When talking with your customer, always be kind and polite.  Clean up after every job, making sure the job site is always left better than it was found.

Always Use Common Sense

Trust your instincts and listen to what your mind is telling you.  If something seems too good to be true, then it may well be too good to be true. And remember, a successful HVAC business always starts with excellent schooling, so make sure you begin your search at best-hvactraining.com for schools that have been seen in Newsweek and USA Today.  There, you will always find the very best schools.

By following these simple tips, you will be on your road to success.
